Museum of the National Theatre

  • situated on 2 , Nicolae Bălcescu Boulevard
  • it is placed in the basement of the National Theatre, between The Big Hall and Amphitheatre Hall
  • the exhibits of the museum dates since 1942, when Liviu Rebreanu was the director of the theatre, and actor George Franga unveiled a real theatre treasure: pictures, sculptures, original photos, personal belongings and costumes that belonged to famous actors of the past, pieces of furniture, rare documents, etc.
  • in the museum there are also the portraits of the 44 directors of the first stage
  • the museum also houses a series of manifestations – from papers, evocations and press conferences to reading – performances and evenings of poetry


Firemen Museum

  • located on 33 Ferdinand I Boulevard
  • it is hosted by a building that represented an old watch tower against fire called “The Fire Watch Tower”
  • The Fire Watch Tower was built in 1892 according to architect George Mandrea’s plans, as a surveillance and alarming point because Coltea Tower that served this purpose was demolished in 1888
  • at the groundfloor of the construction were the fire carriages and horses, on the first floor were the soldiers and the second was destined to the commandant
  • The Fire Watch Tower or The Fire Station no 5 functioned for 44 years until 1936 when the firemen were moved to another edifice
  • in 1968 The Fire Watch Tower became Firemen National Museum
  • the museum exhibits documents, photographs showing the firemen’s training and photos of the great fires in the country
  • here one can see the equipment used by firemen along the time, pumps of different types and from different times, the flags of the firemen’s units and costumes used by firemen
  • the museum hosts the collection of paintings and other art objects that illustrate man’s fight with firem – the book of the Memorable Great Fire


Prof. Eng. Dimitrie Leonida Technical Museum

  • located on General Candiano Popescu street
  • it functions since 1909 and bears the name of the university professor specialist in energetics
  • it had as model The Technical Museum in Munchen (1903)
  • in 1908 Dimitrie Leonida founded the first school for electricians and mechanics from Romania
  • with his pupils, professor Leonida gathered the first pieces that would constitute the nucleus of the future museum
  • some of the most important pieces of the museum:
  • The cylinder of the first steam engine, used in Romanian industry, engine brought from Vienna in 1853 to be used at acting the oil press and the mill-stones to grind wheat
  • Gogu Constantinescu sonic engine 1916
  • Two Brush dynamos (1882) of the first electric power station in the country
  • MAn electric tram engine (1894). The tram was introduced in Bucharest in 1894
  • Aurel Persu automobile with aerodynamic shape, the first of the kind in the world, having the wheels included in the inside of the aerodynamic lines. It was built in 1923 and patented in 1924. The inventor covered over 100,000 km with it.


Museum of Folk Costumes

  • located in the building of the Palace of Parliament, in A3-F houses, with the entrance from 2-4 Izvor street, district 5
  • today it is part of the Village National Museum “Dimitrie Gusti”, museal institution subordinated to the Ministry of Culture and Cults
  • it was inaugurated in November 24th 2004
  • it lies on a surface of 2.200 square meters and houses one of the biggest exhibitions of traditional costumes in Europe
  • the oldest piece is a century old and the newest is 40 years old
  • together with the costumes there are displayed : textures, tissues, carpets pottery and pictures with traditional motifs
  • The first donation for the Museum of Folk Costumes was that of Marghiolita Constantinescu Rogojan, who donated 235 Romanian folk costumes
  • With the occasion of the inauguration, the donator of the collection was awarded, by a presidential decree, The National Order "Steaua Romaniei"


The National Museum of Contemporary Art

  • located in the building of the Palace of Parliament, with the entrance on 13 September Avenue
  • it was inaugurated in may 31st,  2004 and officially opened to the public in October 29th
  • it lies on 16,000 m², out of which 7,800 m² represent the surface of the exhibition halls
  • arranged in western style, set on 6 levels and basement, the museum also includes – besides the spaces for exhibiting – storage rooms, laboratories and conference rooms
  • to get to the last floor, where there is the terrace, media space and the library, the visitors can use one of the two exterior lifts
  • the museum hosts 18.000 pieces, whose acquisition started in 2002
  • the visiting program is between 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
